When the Dot NET generic Top-Level Domain was initially introduced in 1985, together with the first domains on the World Wide Web, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Because there were no particular regulations about the usage of the TLD, though, dot NET domains were secured and used for various purposes and by a large number of people. This TLD is a good substitution for dot COM, notably if the desirable domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
